Top 5 Nutritious After-School Snacks

Now that the kids are back in school, FitNFun4Kids shares five healthy and delicious snacks that can be prepared on weekends and used throughout the week!

By FitNFun4Kids

Cooking is a great opportunity to spend quality time with your children. Adults are strongly advised to supervise at all times, especially when sharp objects or hot surfaces are involved!

1. Homemade Fruit Dip Severed with Apples, Bananas, or Strawberries

Mix 1 cup plain Greek yogurt and ½ cup peanut butter to a smooth consistency. This simple and delicious dip is packed with protein to curve your kiddo’s appetite until dinner, and it’s extremely budget-friendly!

2. Pizza Bites

Thinly spread 1 tablespoon of spaghetti sauce of your choice and low fat shredded mozzarella cheese onto the top of a whole grain bagel. (Optional: Add pepperoni slices and/or veggies.) Bake the mini-pizzas in a pre-heated oven at 300 F for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted. Allow to cool and serve. (Toaster ovens are great for this recipe.) This is a great way to introduce your kids to new vegetables if sliced very finely. It’s also a recipe that the entire family can make together!

3. Good Morning Sunshine Smoothie (from FitNFun4Kids Kids Cookbook)

Blend to a smooth consistency ½ cup frozen blueberries, 1 cup frozen strawberries, ½ cup of ice, 1 cup plain low fat yogurt, and 12 ounces orange juice. This is awesome for a warm day or when you’re on the go. For added nutrients, include chia or flax seeds.

4. Banana Pops

Cut bananas in half (approximately 4” each). Stick Popsicle stick vertically through the banana. Dip in low fat yogurt, and then sprinkle with thinly sliced almonds, pecans, or walnut chunks. Chill the pops for approximately 30 minutes or until ingredients are stiff. Not a banana lover? Don’t worry! Pineapple chunks are an awesome substitution!

5. Inside-Out Candy Apple

Slice (horizontally, approximately 2” thick) and core a medium-sized apple. Select 2 similarly sized slices. On each side, spread peanut butter, Nutella, or caramel. Then on one side, sprinkle raw granola. Join the sides for an easy get-up-and-go sweet treat.
